3-Day Design Thinking Facilitation Training and Certification

Learn how to facilitate Design Thinking workshop sessions in this 3-day high energy course for Design Thinking practitioners. So, you read all the books and articles on Design Thinking. You attended a few training sessions. You know the famous case studies. You get it. But how to facilitate a Design Thinking session?

This ‘Learning by Doing’ experience in a 3-day classroom setting is followed by a Personal Online Coaching sessions for you to learn how to facilitate Design Thinking workshop sessions for mixed audiences. The activities for the 3-day classroom training are a balanced mix of theory and practice:

To facilitate is to make thing easier and “progress” human situations and process. This session imparts the process of setting agendas, steering processes, framing analyses, and summarising conclusions.

We will walk through the Design Thinking Process and how to plan for, initiate and manage a Design Thinking Project. You will workshop key challenges in embedding a new, collaborative way of doing in your organisation.

Learn to facilitate human-centered participative processes that build stakeholder empathy. Design thinking is a human-centric framework with empathy at its core. To design improved systems that are desirable it is necessary for researchers to connect to how the stakeholders see and experience the system in which they find themselves, given their needs and circumstances. This session helps participants in empathising with their future participants. That they may learn to help future workshop participants empathise with their stakeholders. We highlight that empathy is not just a stage in the DT framework, but an essential golden thread that connects the user need to the final solution. “How might we help participants get out of each others and their own way?” is the key question we deal with.

In the afternoon you will learn to facilitate participative processes that generated many diverse and innovative ideas. Divergent thinking is the ability to generate new or more complicated ideas from a single source. Their are two divergent thinking elements in a typical design thinking process. This session helps provides participants with practical hands-on techniques to help their future workshop particpants be comfortable in ambiguity and not converge on a solution to rapidly particulalry during the “discovery” stage of design thinking. We will help with what coniderations are necessary as one prepares for a divergent design thinking exercise.

Learn to facilitate participative processes that synthesise and evaluate research findings and insights as well as diverse ideas. Convergent thinking is the ability to synthesise and evaluate a wide variety of ideas and insights into useful formulations of design problems. Here participants learn to lead future workshop attendees to the essential reframe of the problem or to an actual workable solution that emerges throught the prototyping phase.

In the afternoon you will learn to facilitate participative processes that bring innovative ideas and concepts to life. Facilitating rapid prototyping involves helping particpants to iteratively and quickly create and test visual/ experiential artefacts that give detail, form, and nuance to the intangible concepts generated in the divergent thinking phases. We help workshop participants with what is required to set-up the conditions and principles for their future participants to actively prototype and converge on workeable solutions. Key principles include testing and reflecting on the fail fast but learn quickly mindset. “How might we set up a team for succesful prototyping of key concepts” will be covered.

Facilitation is key in running successful Design Thinking workshop sessions r programs, which usually bring together people from diverse backgrounds and even cultures to work on specific challenges. Creating space and a condusive environment where people feel confident and creative is the key responsibility for the facilitator.

We strongly believe in ‘Learning by Doing’, so the Facilitation Training will be a high energy hands-on event. You’ll be challenged to work in small teams working on all the different aspects of facilitating workshops. The focus will be on improving your personal facilitation skills in the design and management of design thinking workshops.

This video gives you a glimpse of our Facilitation Training delivered around the world:

The objective of the 3-day classroom training is to understand the facilitation skills’ required to successfully plan for and manage Design Thinking sessions through a combination of facilitation experiences and coaching. The activities for the 3-day classroom training are a balanced mix of theory and practice.

Core capabilities we will cover are Socratic questioning, focussing conversations and following participatory methods. Opening diverse and trans-disciplinary teams to new opportunities. The Double  Diamond approach to Design Thinking; Management of participative processes across divergent and convergent thinking and doing practices. Facilitating for uncertainty and ambiguity in individuals, building accuracy and logic to reduce risk, covering desirability, feasibility and viability (adding value to stakeholders), how to bring the intangible to life and to help others make sense of complexity. Imoprtantly we help facilitator candidates reflect on their style of facilitation and to become aware on their impact on groups and individuals.

Workshop Design and review of the participant’s workshop examples: The content of the Online Coaching Reconnect Session (1 hours) will be adjusted based on the participants’ needs.

DesignThinkers Academy offers a design thinking facilitator certification. This is a 3 month closely supported program that provides you with a certification of competence from a recognized thought leader with a 10 year track record in design thinking capability development across the globe. You will apply your learning on a relevant project and provide a portfolio of work performed to be evaluated by our global evaluation panel.

The facilitators will guide you through the different activities during the Design Thinking Facilitation Training.
