So you’ve read all the books and articles on Service Design & Design Thinking. You’ve had some basic Design Thinking training. You’ve listened to inspirational keynote speakers at conferences. You know the famous case studies. You get it. But how do you facilitate a Design Thinking session? How do you design a high energy learning flow? That calls for a different skill set. DesignThinkers Academy can help you out.
Learn how to facilitate Design Thinking workshop sessions in this 2-day, high energy course for Design Thinking practitioners.
You will get a ‘learning by doing’ experience in a 2-day workshop setting, followed by a personal online coaching session, so you can learn how to facilitate Design Thinking workshop sessions for diverse groups.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
The objective of the 2-day training is to understand your current facilitation skills, your strengths & weaknesses, and to improve upon your personal opportunity areas through a combination of facilitation practice and personal coaching. The activities for the 2-day training are a balanced mix of theory and practice.
DAY 1: Facilitation skills assessment, workshop types, core Design Thinking workshop flow, problem statement definition & the art of facilitation, agenda & workshop design.
DAY 2: Energy management, facilitation team management, facilitating an actual Design Thinking workshop, feedback on facilitation skills.
PREREQUISITES – PLEASE NOTE! To attend this training you need to already have basic knowledge of Design Thinking through training such as DT Academy’s Service Design Fundamentals, DesignThinkers Bootcamp, or some other design thinking training.
Workshop & agenda design for different types of workshops
- Problem statements & reframing
- Facilitation theory, tips and hands-on experience with a real case study
- Energy management, reading the room & dealing with disturbances
- Core Design Thinking workshop flow as a starting point for future workshop design
PERSONAL COACHING SESSION
A half-hour, remote coaching session scheduled with each participant following the training will address specific topics that the participant wants to cover in more depth. Topics could range from workshop design, or curating participants, to coaching on how to engage senior management. The content of the personalized coaching session will be adjusted based on the participant’s needs.
Facilitation is key in running successful Design Thinking sessions that are meant to bring together people from diverse backgrounds to work on specific challenges. The key responsibility of the facilitator is to create an environment where people feel confident to think differently and to access their creativity.
We strongly believe in the principle of ‘learning by doing,’ so this training will be a high energy, hands-on event. You’ll be challenged to work in a small team, going through different aspects of facilitating a Design Thinking workshop. You will work with core Design Thinking tools like stakeholder mapping, customer journey mapping, and prototyping. The focus, however, will be on developing your personal facilitation skills in the context of designing and facilitating Design Thinking workshops.

Marc Bolick leads the US office of DesignThinkers Group, working to help clients find creative solutions to complex problems and to embed design thinking as a strategic advantage in their organizations. With over 20 years of experience in various aspects of product and service design, Marc has worked in a variety of sectors and clients including General Electric, Michelin, SAP, Coca-Cola, Qualcomm, Bank of America, Electrolux, Master Card, the US Agency for International Development, the US Food and Drug Administration, and a variety of early-stage companies.
Robert Bau is a heavy-weight strategist and thought leader in service innovation, branding, and marketing with more than 15 years agency experience in shaping customer expectations and experiences in our post-industrial society. Between 2011 and 2014 Robert played an instrumental role in building the first MFA and BFA service design programs in the US. Robert is currently Senior Service Design Director at Fjord.
Ezequiel Williams is a business strategist, service designer, ethnographer, and innovation consultant passionate about helping organizations better understand their customers and create offerings that people want and drive brand loyalty. He works with leaders to solve complex problems using a combination of design thinking, anthropology, and business tools to create value for organizations’ customers as well as their employees.
Our main objective is to provide you with hands-on tools and improved facilitation skills that you can apply immediately to your work.
As part of the training program you will receive a facilitation handbook, a certificate of completion, and access to the DT Academy Network online environment.
